Red Butte
Red Butte
Parts of Northwest Wyoming have a lot of iron oxide in the soil and that's what gives the red buttes on the Eastern slope of the Absarokas their beautiful red color. Taken from Dead Indian highway where Chief Joseph led the Nez Perce away from the trap set for him.

Things I Love
YOUR WORK IS MOST UNIQUE....YOU are, I believe, a rare artist and one in a million who favors the pipe and gives it the regal treatment it deserves. I do not know if you smoke, it is not my business, but until one really know the joy of smoking a pipe, they do not know the true nature of tobacco pleasure

VENICE ALLEYS OF THE 1960S
If there's one major truth about painting with watercolors, it is the sense the artist has that the painting is either not "quite right" or "not quite" done, two sensations that can totally ruin what could have been a fairly decent watercolor.
These two personal assessments are not restricted to the zany or psychotic artist, they are absolutely normal whether one is a Sunday painter or commercial artist. How do I know? Simple, I have been around long enough to know these facts through personal experience and through conversation with other artists. Moreover, observation is the evidence that supports these opinions. What can we do to minimize our cost of expensive French watercolor paper and increase our confidence and self-esteem?
The answer is as primary as a a set of Prang watercolor paints. Remove the painting and set it aside for several weeks. Look at it after the time lapse and ask yourself several questions. Should there be more black lines around the window sills? Do you really need to make the blonde's hair longer? And how about the biceps of the men showing off--should they be more pronounced and obvious? Should there be two more palm trees down by the beach? After pondering over these superficial dilemmas, one will usually decide that enough is enough.
Now, about the part that there's something about the work that is "not quite right." That, unfortunately, is the realization and admission that only a few people can paint like Don Kingman. If we are so naive or vain that we do not want to exhibit until we perfect our art to the heights that Kingman's art has reached, we might as well put the brushes and paints out in the garage and wait for a neighborhood sale.We must believe that although we are not as professional and prolific as artists like Kingman, we must accept our style as our own and learn to appreciate it as our contribution to the very large and sometimes hollow world of art. To continue our momentum and keep our spirits positive, we need to keep painting as many subjects and scenes as possible. Sooner or later, we will accept ourselves as being the best we can be and understand our style is unique.
We might even begin to really appreciate our work and feel a warm fondness and affection for our paintings in much the same manner as we appreciate the work of our favorite artists. There is nothing to prevent us from looking at Kingman's magnificent watercolors and hoping that in time, we will feel like we are getting better with the completion of each new and different watercolor. That is, I honestly believe, what Don Kingman believed each time he finished a painting. One fact is obvious, he knew when to sign his name to signify that it was done.

POEM FOR SISTER
my dear sister packed her
long designer gowns, her shells
found along the morning
shores and beach,
sold her penthouse
crown atop
a pink condo
high rise and headed home
to where her foxes and
wild turkey roam
through wooded hills
and valleys deep,
to read and keep
her mind serene,
at peace
in forest glades
divine, to reflect
upon a peace divine.

SOMETIMES OLD AGE GETS DEPRESSING...
Religion is a subject that still warms the wax in aged ears. Because of our mortality, there is always that hope that someone has finally really found the guarantee for eternal life with factual proof of that life. Before I shake the very souls of my ancestor's bones, let me state that I have not given up the faith; no, I have as much faith now as I always have. There is one difference between then and now, however. It is called time.
That is to say, the day of reckoning is much nearer now than it was in 1960. Oh, I knew that I was a mere mortal nearly fifty years ago, but that knowledge is gaining volume, the wisdom is thickening. Waking in the middle of the night from a dream, I concentrate on its content and hope I can make some sense of it. But dreams leave one hanging and few dreams make sense. Not too long ago, in that thin haze that hangs between reality and dreams, I caught a dream like one catches a big fish. It was a whopper. It was a dream filled with wisdom. Could it possibly have been a revealation?
It was if I had the answers to all of the mysteries of the ages. The answers to almost every question I have ever had were right in front of me, magically marked on the linen sheet, written on the regrigerator door, scrawled on the ceiling, traced in the dust on the back of a black sedan. My coffee tasted better than usual that morning.
It isn't everyday that one gains that much wisdom and is able to retain it. That's right, every question and curiosity I have ever entertained, answered in factual truths. They were, in my opinion, factual truths. I want to mention them in a future article, but I will not forget them.
The one question that still remains, the one that has haunted most people since time began. I am going to do some more extensive research, but I don't imagine I will be able to gladden the day with any new answers. There are those who mention that Mother Theresa admitted she did not have all of the answers. That was no news to most of us who have thought about eternity. Sister Theresa might have had some questions, a few doubts--that is all part of our human nature. If I had Sister Theresa's track record, one thing is certain, I would worry much less about eternity.

IF ONE WONDERS EXACTLY WHAT KIND OF NUTS ARE IN CHARGE OF NORTH KOREA, READ ABOUT THE BIG CONNIE SHOT DOWN BY A NORTH KOREAN MIG AND THE NUMBER OF LIVES LOST. AND OF COURSE, THERE'S THE USS PUEBLO, STILL IN NORTH KOREA AND ON DISPLAY AS PROOF THAT WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN "AFTER THEM."
WHEN I RECALL WHAT GENERAL MACARTHUR HAD IN MIND FOR NORTH KOREA, I REGRET THAT PRESIDENT TRUMAN RECALLED THE GREATEST GENERAL THE US EVER HAD: CHANCES ARE NORTH KOREA WOULD BE ENJOYING THE PROSPERITY OF SOUTH KOREA TODAY HAD TRUMAN NOT RECALLED MACARTHUR. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN NO NORTH AND SOUTH KOREA, JUST ONE KOREA, A NATION OF PROSPERITY.
SOMETIMES, ONE REALLY WONDERS HOW HARD SOME OF THESE LEADERS HAVE TO TRY IN ORDER TO BE THE ASSHOLES THEY ARE WHEN THEY COULD HAVE BEEN GREAT LEADERS. WHERE IS IT THAT THEY GO WRONG?
ARE NUTS LIKE THE DEAR LEADER JUST DESTINED TO BE A-HOLES OR DO THEY MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO SEE HOW MUCH THEY CAN ______UP THEIR NATION?
PHOTOGRAPHY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A FAVORITE KIND OF ADVENTURE
ONE OF MY ORIGINAL AMBITIONS IN LIFE AS A YOUNG MAN WAS TO BECOME A WORLD TRAVELER. I LEFT HOME TO SEEK MY FORTUNE AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA WHEN I WAS FIVE. MY AUNT AND UNCLE PACKED ME A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH AND PERMITTED ME TO LEAVE THE HOME. (MY GRANDFATHER HAWTHORNE, I AM TOLD, TAILED ME TO MAKE SURE I DID NOT ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS). I DECIDED TO DELAY MY TRAVELS UNTIL I WAS OLDER AND RETURNED HOME.
.
LATER ON, IN MY EARLY TEENS, I DECIDED TO SIGN ON AS A DECK HAND ON A TRAMP STEAMER. BY 1959, TRAMP STEAMERS HAD GONE THE WAY OF MANY GREAT ADVENTURES; FEW TRAM STEAMERS WERE TAKING ON CREW MEMBER. IN 1960, MY LIFE AS AN ADULT BEGAN...

JAPANESE VILLAGE OF THE 60S
AN ESSAY ON WISDOM AND CREATION AND OLD LOVE AFFAIRS BY R.L. HUFFSTUTTER
When one thinks of what the world would be like if there had been no seas or oceans to seperate the various nations, it is not difficult to understand why the seas were created as boundaries. In my opinion, the world was designed by intelligence, not by nuclear explosions in a vast space of emptiness. This is an opinion. Think about what might have happened when one nation decided to take over the entire world if there had been no seas. My first thought is that of Genghis Kahn. He would have had to have one hell of a lot of horses wouldn't he? And how could he have ever dealt with the residents of Arkansas and the Ozarks. Oh, I know, the Europeans had not yet swooped down on the hills of the Ozarks and no guns were in use. The Native Americans, however, would not have thought kindly of his noisy bunch running around down there like a bunch of "wild__________". Edited for PC purposes. Seriously, do you ever think about these things? Sure, we all do. Most of us think about them once or twice in our lifetimes and go on to the next subject: making a living and getting loaded. Or going off to a crafts class. How long has it been since there have been real thinkers like Plato, Aristotle and Jimmy Carter? All of us could take a lesson from the movie stars and celebrities and start writing our own books on wisdom and knowledge. For example, wasn't it Barbara Walters, famous newsperson of our century who imparted her wisdom about her affair with a certain Senator long ago. Now if this isn't the kind of wisdom the world is hungering for, I don't know what is. Maybe we could all write about our old affairs. Wouldn't that be nice. Seriously, that isn't exactly what I was trying to get across when I mentioned wisdom. R.L. Huffstutter
