IN ADDITION TO WRITING AND PAINTING, PHOTOGRAPHY HAS LONG BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE PASTIMES.
ONE OF MY ORIGINAL AMBITIONS IN LIFE AS A YOUNG MAN WAS TO BECOME A WORLD TRAVELER. I LEFT HOME TO SEEK MY FORTUNE AND FIND OUT THE TRUTH ABOUT SANTA WHEN I WAS FIVE. MY AUNT AND UNCLE PACKED ME A PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH AND PERMITTED ME TO LEAVE THE HOME. (MY GRANDFATHER HAWTHORNE, I AM TOLD, TAILED ME TO MAKE SURE I DID NOT ENCOUNTER PROBLEMS). I DECIDED TO DELAY MY TRAVELS UNTIL I WAS OLDER AND RETURNED HOME.

LATER ON, IN MY EARLY TEENS, I DECIDED TO SIGN ON AS A DECK HAND ON A TRAMP STEAMER. BY 1959, TRAMP STEAMERS HAD GONE THE WAY OF MANY GREAT ADVENTURES; FEW TRAM STEAMERS WERE TAKING ON CREW MEMBER. IN 1960, MY LIFE AS AN ADULT BEGAN...
