ON REMEMBERING MEN WHO DRESSED WELL AND ALWAYS SEEMED TO BE SMOKING A PIPE
There was a time when pipes were almost necessary accessories for the men who wanted to look a cut-above the rest. The pipe added the look of refinement as opposed to the look of the "dandy." This, of course, is only my opinion and is open for debate.
When I recall my first glimpses of well-dressed men as a boy, they were usually wearing tweed, a vest, and sometimes a somewhat short-brimmed hat. And they were smoking a pipe.
If there is one thing most pipe-smokers share in common when being photographed, it is the pipe. We must absolutely have our pipe in hand or pressed in the corner of our mouth for posterities sake.
As if posterity is really going to give a hoot what we have pressed between our lips.
