Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach by Kwong Yee Cheng
Laguna Beach, a photo by Kwong Yee Cheng on Flickr.

One of the best photos of Laguna Beach I have seen. My congratulations to Kwong Yee Cheng for a panoramic masterpiece.

Back in the 60s, one could purchase a home with a great ocean view for $25,000; in the 90s, the price was about $600,000. Now, I would guess that it would take a million dollars for any abode with a view of the blue Pacific.

USS HORNET CVA-12

USS HORNET CVA-12 by roberthuffstutter
USS HORNET CVA-12, a photo by roberthuffstutter on Flickr.

USS Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS-12) is a United States Navy aircraft carrier of the Essex class. Construction started in August 1942; she was originally named USS Kearsarge, but was renamed in honor of the USS Hornet (CV-8), which was lost in October 1942, becoming the eighth ship to bear the name.

Hornet was commissioned in November 1943, and after three months of training joined the U.S. forces in the Pacific War. She played a major part in the Pacific battles of World War II, and also took part in Operation Magic Carpet, returning troops back to the U.S. Following World War II, she served in the Korean War, Vietnam War, and also played a part in the Apollo program, recovering astronauts as they returned from the Moon.

Hornet was finally decommissioned in 1970. She was eventually designated a National Historic Landmark, and in 1998 she opened to the public as the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda, California

There is a ton of history about this great carrier. Your photos of the USS Hornet are the best.

These photos would make super posters for recruiting. As a former USN vet, these photos make me proud I served; they make me wish I had put in 30 years instead of 5 years.

Hollywood and Vine 1958 (looking North on Vine street)

This is where I was discovered, sitting on a bar stool in a nearby bar (not visible in this image). From this moment on, California became the definition for fun. How time flys.

How my mind raced as I recalled the many joys of youth as I discovered the golden state of California. My first visit to California was in the summer of 1959. I took the bus from the Los Angeles Union Station to Venice Beach.

Your image of Hollywood and Vine in 1958 wiped away more than 50 years of age. Suddenly, I was young again. Thanks.

Inspiration Point, The Grand View

ABSTRACT ART HAS BEEN A FAVORITE GENRE OF MINE SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. This gallery is dedicated to my beloved art teacher, Lucy Jenkins, Van Horn High School, Kansas City, Missouri.

Now deceased, she was one lady who inspired students through her individual attention to each student. She always accented the positive. Her attitude and upbeat approach to each individual's talent has always reminded me that art is a strictly personal subject.

"If you enjoy it and it pleases you, that is what matters," was her advice. If Lucy taught me anything about art, it was composition, but whatsmore, it was her personal attention to me that helped me to realize as I went forward in life, that paying attention to individuals is an important part of being a friend, a father, or simply a passing stranger, helping one who needs a little help or some kind words and a smile.

Yes, I remember Lucy Jenkins' smile and compliments.

Old Beechcraft C-18 circa 1962

One of the most dangerous flights I was ever on was in this old faithful type of aircraft. Had taken off from old NAS OLATHE in summer of 61 and ran into red dust storm somewhere over N. Mexico. Zero visibility, no instrument landing capabilities, just red dust. Could feel it in our throats and respitory systems. The Navy pilot finally eased it down into slight visibility and landed in an arid and remote field.

End of a perfect connection to San Diego. 24 hours later, arrived via Greyhound in San Diego. It was quite a fun experience for a youth, fodder for lots of hours at the club.

TWA (Trans World Airlines) landing at the Fresno airport in California in 1962. View looking due east. The foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains are faintly visible on the horizon.

I consider the Connie to be the most beautiful and graceful prop-driven airliner of all time. And it did sound fantastic when it flew over. It's development began in 1943 and it was truely ahead of its time.

Too bad they are not in service as an option for cross country flights. They flew at an altitude to permit viewing our GREAT AMERICAN LANDSCAPE Editor RLH.

VACUUM CLEANER SUCKED HER WIG OFF

VACUUM CLEANER SUCKED HER WIG OFF
It all began after the store closed. It was summer and it stayed light longer. The art fair was winding down, it was the last day. The artists were packing up, leaving. It was all over for another year. I stood over in a nook and cranny, smoking my pipe to keep the smoke from polluting the air around the gazers and gawkers who always show up in great numbers at the end of an art show. To make a long story short, I noticed a cleaning crew meandering about, dusting this and dusting that. I could see a lot of attention was being paid to something other than the task. While the crew seemed to be looking at photos on a cell phone, the vacuum hose held by a member of the crew tilted and in an instant the wig that adorned the mannequin's head disappeared, sucked into the big industrial unit that was out of window and in an aisle. I watched as the crew finished their task, walking away slowly still laughing and examining the cell phone photos. The wig was sucked away, possibly forever. I didn't go back to check to see if the wig had been rescued. But the more I look at this photo, the more I like the look.

beretania and maunakea st, chinatown

This image reminds me of how the Hawaii of another era might have looked.

I like the arched windows, the awnings, the windows with the transom panes and the patina of what appears to be an elegant traffic signal.

What else about this painting do I enjoy? I like the electrical poles with the lines that are relaxed, not uptight. The entire scene conveys a more relaxed time in our nation's history.

The shadows and washes below the awnings are especially blended perfectly and could stand on their own merit. Great work.

Thanks to Howard33 for a great Americana photo. This is really a fascinating and unique photo. I clearly remember each of these items that were once so visible as I traveled about the USA. Great capture. Hopefully, it will become a photo for today's children to study in their American history classes.

Fishing Boats in Yokahama Harbor

Photographs by Cliff McCarthy.

Over 60 years have passed since these images were taken by Cliff McCarthy in and around Tokyo. At the time, McCarthy was an Air Force Sgt. As a way of passing time before his return to the United States, he borrowed a Speed Graphic camera from his 36th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron and explored his surroundings. In this collection you will find images of contrast and beauty within a society in transition.

“When you meet face-to-face, it’s an entirely different thing than the abstractness of war”, McCarthy said. “The humanity that we all possess emerges immediately. The act of photographing them was one of friendship.”

The photographs can be found as part of the permanent collection at Chubu University in Kasugai, Japan, Ohio University’s sister university.
